When I think back over my professional journey this last year, I am reminded of one of my favorite movie lines compliments of Ferris Bueller: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around for a while, you could miss it.” To say that my professional life has been moving fast is a gross understatement.
Here’s a quick summary of the 2014-2015 school year:
In the past year, I ignited at ISTE 2014, I was given the opportunity to serve as Director on our regional CUE Board, I organized and ran our first annual district Google Boot Camp, I presented at CUE Tech Fest with one of the most amazing and passionate teachers in my school district (Go @kellymatson678 – her first time presenting!!!), I filled in at the CETPA conference as a CUE Lead Learner and was invited to be a part of that community of edtech leaders, I earned my Google Educator certification, I was invited to attend the Google Teacher Academy in Austin, TX, I brought a team of 30 teachers and administrators from my district to the GAFE Summit in Roseville and did a team presentation with 8 rockin’ teachers from my district on our #lusded story, I launched the #connectedTL chat on Twitter and Pinterest with 2 of the most inspiring EdTech leaders I have met (@rhondacorippo and @MrVaudrey… I am constantly in awe), I joined others in the digital badges movement by participating in and helping to moderate the weekly #badgechatk12 Twitter chat as well as the Educator PD Badge Consortium, I stepped up as a CUE/Common Sense Media Digital Citizenship Trainer, I piloted and rolled out GAFE and Chromebooks to 6 sites in my schools district, and I was faculty at CUE Rockstar Teacher Camp in Lake Tahoe.
Oh! And I had a baby.
So yeah, it’s time to “stop and look around for a while.” And you know what I see? That I’m not alone. Thank goodness! Even though there are a lot of “I’s” in that paragraph above, there isn’t one stop on this journey that was truly done by me and only me. One of the most humbling realities is that I am completely dependent on my district community, professional learning network, friends, and family to make all these dreams a reality. And each dream I have is made stronger each and every time I share them with others.

CUE Rockstar Teacher Camp was such a special time because I was out of my day-to-day routine and able to completely surround myself with positive, energetic, and exciting educators who want to grow and learn. It was three days of non-stop sharing and learning, laughing and connecting. On my way down the mountain, all I could think was, “I want more of all of this. Not only for me, but for the teachers and leaders in my district!” I am addicted to the high of turning teachers into learners, leaders into models, and trainers into students. We all have something to learn from each other, and I am grateful everyday for the opportunities I have had this past year because my network grew stronger. I am a better resource for the teachers and admin I support and that makes them a better resource for the students. And after all, isn’t that what this is all about?
